Birth Certificate Fees and Requests
Kandiyohi County charges $26 for a certified birth certificate with a raised seal. This is the standard fee set by Minnesota law. A non-embossed certified copy costs $19. Most legal and government purposes require the embossed version with the raised seal. The non-embossed copy may be accepted in some informal situations but check with the receiving agency first.
The office takes cash, check, money order, and credit card. In-person requests are the fastest way to get your certificate. Bring a valid photo ID and be ready to state your relationship to the person named on the record. Mail-in requests take longer but work well if you are not local. Include a signed request letter, a legible copy of your ID, and your payment made out to Kandiyohi County.
Under Minn. Stat. Section 144.225, access to certified birth records is restricted to the registrant, their parents, spouse, adult children, legal guardian, or someone with a valid court order. If you do not fall into one of these categories, you will not be able to get a certified copy. You may still be able to use the public viewing station for basic research.

State-Level Birth Record Access
The Minnesota Department of Health at health.state.mn.us/people/vitalrecords/ is the statewide custodian for all vital records. If you prefer to go through the state rather than the county office, MDH can issue certified birth certificates for Kandiyohi County births. The state office handles both mail-in requests and online orders through VitalChek.
MDH also provides guidance on ordering a birth certificate at health.state.mn.us/people/vitalrecords/birthnc.html. This page walks you through the steps, lists required documents, and explains the fee structure. It is a helpful starting point if you are unsure where to begin or which type of certificate you need.
For older birth records and genealogy research, the Minnesota Historical Society maintains a guide at libguides.mnhs.org/vital/birth. Kandiyohi County records from the late 1800s and early 1900s may be found through both the county office and MNHS sources. Checking both can help you fill in any gaps.
Note: VitalChek orders may carry an additional service fee on top of the state certificate fee.
